About Thekla

Thekla Altmann (she/they) is a poet and writer from Communist East Germany. She spent her youth travelling around a unified Europe, studied music and literature in Germany and the UK, and holds a Master's degree in Literary Translation from the University of Wales, Swansea. After spending many years translating and editing other people's texts, she returned to her own writing after moving to Canada in 2011.

Thekla is a member of and outspoken advocate for immigrants and the LGBTQ+ communities, and feels that her own invisibility as both is a tool to be used liberally. She lives in rural Nova Scotia with her wife and kid, and works as a model for painters and in a library, though not at the same time.

Sheree Fitch (Order of Canada recipient and award-winning author)

“Your pen was a magic wand; it made me feel truth and feel beauty. Brilliant. Thank you so.”

“I read this holding my breath. I cried. I was scared. Outraged. Lines simply gutting and others a wow.”
